Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students consist of inner city children that come from low income families, some are even homeless. As a teacher in an Urban Abbot district, i work with 4 and 5 year-old students ranging in levels of development. I have several students with special needs (IEP's) that are currently mainstreamed into my general education classroom. One student in particular currently has a personal aid to help support him in his daily school related tasks.
My student population consists of inner city children mainly coming from low income families.
They range from 4-5 years of age. I have several students with special needs, one in particular with a personal aid. We are a dual-language school where students learn English and Spanish. We are proud to be a national school of character!
My Project
During active hands on student learning, a MacBook Pro would be a wonderful education tool to aid students in their curiosity. We have an abundance of learning areas in the classroom offering a means for students to manipulate the environment through hands-on interaction. We keep science journals and often create projects based on their interest. When students are curious about a subject or topic, it is the job of the teacher to help students learn as much about the topic through active investigation. We create KWL charts detailing what students know about a topic, what they want to learn and once the project is complete, we fill in what students learned. Having a MacBook Pro in the classroom would allow students to immediately research topics they are curious about. For instance, a few students discussed how their parents recycle. This brought on a whole discussion on why it's important to recycle. We created our own recycling center in the classroom for students to engage in and reuse materials. With a MacBook Pro, we would have been able to take our project much further by taking a virtual trip to a recycling center where students could actually see what happens to garbage once it leaves their home. We could also see what garbage can do to the environment if it's not properly disposed of. This is one of many examples. Having a MacBook Pro in the classroom means that we can move it throughout the learning areas and use it to research and look up information as learning is taking place. With this wonderful technology, we could take their learning one step further. The headphones would be a wonderful way to keep students who are doing the research engaged without distracting the rest of the class.
