Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember all of the really cool books you read in elementary and middle school? Books like A Wrinkle in Time, Hatchet, and Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. I love books! My students do too!
My students are intensely curious and highly motivated to explore new ideas.
They come to school each day excited to learn new ideas and are ready to work hard. They demonstrate the ability to apply prior knowledge and problem solve. They are very ambitious and strive to excel. In fact, my students inspire me to bring my "A game" everyday.
I teach in a very diverse community in Philadelphia, Pa. My students come from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. One of the things that they have in common is their love for reading and learning. I've recently been assigned an inclusive social studies/science class of 6th graders.
My Project
Although my primary subject matter is science and social studies my students participate in Silent Sustained Reading in class at least three times a week. In fact, many of the concepts explored in social studies are guided through the use of a particular text. Also, my readers often spend lunch and recess periods in class reading.
Literacy skills are critical for development across the academic spectrum.
Young children, particularly those at risk for difficulty in reading later, benefit from the interconnectedness of reading, math, and science domains. These books are rich, and varied in themes and subject matter. My students will be able to extend their exploration of social studies and sciences concepts through fiction and non-fiction text.
