Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with the most amazing kiddos. They are smart, hardworking and beautiful young people. They also happen to have learning differences and need more support to access the general education curriculum.

Each of my students has an Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Each IEP is a plan that includes goals and accommodations to help a student meet individual outcomes or goals beyond their current skills.

Additionally, my students live in East Oakland, California, and face many obstacles including poverty, homelessness, learning English, drugs, and violence. Despite all of these factors working against them, they continue to preserve by attending classes, engaging with their peers, and working towards a better future for themselves and their families.

In the new age of distance learning, I am doing everything I can to make learning accessible to my students through a virtual platform. My days are filled with: making videos, building online classrooms, developing new online lessons, and facilitating Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings with parents and families to ensure that their children are getting the appropriate supports while in school to be successful.

My Project

Additionally, this work is incredibly important and already full of challenges as my students and I learn how to use new technology. This has been especially difficult because I have been doing all of this while using outdated, slow technology.

In order to be the best teacher possible for my special education students during distance learning, it's imperative that I get updated technology that will allow my online classes to run smoothly.

My students who are in the special education (Resource Program) deserve an education that is on par with their general education peers.

Currently, I'm using an outdated, school-issued Chromebook that is hindering my work in the online classroom. I am constantly losing connection to the internet and this interrupts students’ learning on a daily basis.

While showing students how to complete assignments, I am trying to juggle between Zoom, our LMS, attendance, and an assortment of other tabs. Doing all of this on a glitchy, outdated computer is frustratingly slow for myself and students. I know that having a new, updated, and fast computer will help me attend to my students' needs more quickly. I'll be able to use two screens to make class time run more smoothly. The added features that Mac computers have will allow me to do more activities with students that Chromebooks simply can't do. For example, certain websites that I use for specialized academic learning do not run on Chromebooks.
