My students need 20 copies of "Catching Fire" to complete a class set of books for reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Times are hard. Our teachers are getting laid-off, students can't get the full education they need due to severe budget cuts, and it only seems to be getting worse. Our students deserve better. They deserve the best. Support them and give them the materials they need in their classroom.
I have about 100 students in my English classes.
Many of them are already motivated and eager to learn. Some lack motivation and determination. But all share the same interests; they want to succeed. My students are about 99% Hispanic. My students come from an inner-city Title I school.
Many of them come to school despite the odds that are in their favor. The surrounding neighborhoods are full of gangs, drugs, and poverty. Despite all that, these students show up everyday, ready to learn and ready to start their future.
My Project
My students need resources that will motivate them to want to learn. I feel 20 copies of the book, "Catching Fire", will do just that because it is something fresh and popular. This is why they want to read it. What better way to teach them than to use something that inspires and motivates them.
Not only will these materials make them better readers, speakers, and writers, they will also inspire them to want to continue reading other books. It is always the case that all you need is one good book to begin the journey. "Catching Fire" will be used as a way to teach my students narrative and expository themes. All the lessons will be project based.
They will create 3 dimensional diagrams of the setting, soundtracks for their own private version of a movie, puppets with which they will act out scenes from the book, they will research topics such as rich and poor, community, democracy, as well as other projects.
"Knowledge is Power" and what better way to give these kids power!
Giving them a book to read will be something they will cherish for the rest of their lives because reading is such an intricate part of surviving life. It is an essential tool, a life skill. I became a teacher because my 10th grade English teacher took the time to ask us what we liked to read. She then went out and purchased books that we had suggested. I became an English teacher because of her. I want to do the same.
