My Project
My AP Literature students are embarking on a unit on modern American short fiction. One of the authors we are reading is Richard Yates and he has piqued my students' interest to the point where they want to read more of him.
Let me just repeat that: my AP Literature students (students in an urban public school) just got done reading and analyzing Richard Yates... and they LOVED IT!
They got the existentialism, the Marxism, the achingly real human drama!
They understood everything Yates might have wanted them to get out of the book.
With these books, I will be distributing them to my AP Literature class and they will be reading these books in their free time and giving me informal reports as they progress and (eventually) finish these books.
It is my hope that these books will not only prepare my students fully for college but also get them so prepared that their college English classes will be effortless.
Additionally, I just love that my students are becoming such worldly, cultured, and sophisticated young readers and learners! I love that they are connecting with an author from half a century ago, who comes from a culture and era so vastly removed from their own, and yet all they care about are the living, breathing characters and the engaging stories of their lives.
Seriously, times like these are the reason why teachers get up in the morning!
