Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom library is in shambles. When I arrived at the school last year, I was thrilled to have books at all, but after a year and a half at my school, I've learned that the books in my library are so outdated my students won't touch them. I teach seventh and eighth grade literacy at a performing arts school, and it's my job to get our students ready for high school and college by providing rich literature and a strong writing background.
Unfortunately, 95 percent of our students are on free or reduced-price lunch and can't afford to buy their own books, and a third of my students are English Language Learners and struggle with reading and finding books that are on their reading level that are of high interest to them. We're also a title one school.
My students are desperate for good books to read that are interesting to them. Because of budget issues, I haven't received any new books for my library since I got to the school, and many of my books are torn or missing covers. To say the least, my library is a mess. These books will give my students a renewed urgency and desire to read. Some of them already read more than 25 books during the school year, but that number could be much higher with a stronger selection of books for them to choose from. Finally, I want my students to have solid literature to analyze and write college-level essays on.
With your help, I can provide my students with the kind of books they would like to read. We all know that students love to read about things they are interested in, and you can give my students the chance to improve their literacy skills and help make them life-long readers.
