I teach 4th grade scholars in the Miami, Florida area in a difficult neighborhood of extreme poverty. My students are bright, intuitive, and have a drive to succeed no matter their circumstances. My students attend one of the lowest achieving schools with little access to resources and experiences.
My students face unimaginable obstacles inside and outside of the classroom.
A majority of my students are at least a grade level behind where they should be, but that doesn't effect their determination to succeed. My students have a growth mindset, and they continue to amaze me with their perseverance and persistence. They will succeed. They will achieve.
The sky is the limit at my elementary school!
My Project
I need a class set of books titled "Wonder" By R.J Palacio in order to teach my students about tolerance. In my classroom and school community I feel that character education is just as important as content knowledge in reading or math. Having these novels will impact my classroom next school year. I will teach a novel study using this class set of books with my students using the award winning novel and soon to be movie "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. I want to share this story with my students to teach them empathy, acceptance, and diversity. The story talks about a boy named Auggie who has a facial deformity. These books will provide an opportunity for all of my students to interact with a popular book, and we will continue to build on our character education with a future hope to take a class field trip to see "Wonder" in the movie theatre!
I am requesting 4 RCA Cambio touchscreen tablets for my classroom.
Microsoft tablets will be used daily in my classroom during whole group, small group, and independent work time. It is important that we have these as a resource in my classroom to pair with our novels to use for research and various literacy applications like Kahoot, Webster's Dictionary, and 'NoRedInk'. Through past novel studies using "Matilda" and "Frindle" my students thrived on using technology to support their learning through vocabulary, media, and NewsELA resources. They are able to transfer their knowledge from the book and use technology to push their thinking in relation to the world around them.
Through these resources my students will become tolerant and open-minded in learning about people that are different than them. Knowledge is power, and I can't wait to introduce my students to Auggies world!
