Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at my school are seen one way by outsiders and an entirely different way from the staff. Outsiders see them as trouble makers who are lazy and caught up in bad things. Our staff sees them as people whose lives have been wrought with a multitude of obstacles, fear, abuse, and neglect that made learning a low priority next to surviving. We see people of strength who recognized that a traditional school was not a great fit, who did not drop out and instead, made their way to our school of 125 students and seven teachers who work tirelessly to help them see their potential, feel valued and help them to reach their goals of graduation while highlighting real and achievable avenues to take them into the workforce so they can see a way out of their current situation and a way of independence in their future.
My Project
As an English teacher at a continuation high school, it isn't always an easy task to get kids to want to read. To get their take on a story or an author, we do readings in a class called "a taste" where I have them "taste" a book by reading the first chapter with them to see if they are excited about the story or not.
We read chapter 1 from, "The Fault in Our Stars," and they begged me to buy it so we could keep reading!
One of my students suggested, "Do that donor thing where you ask someone to buy us what we need." In true fashion, I took that as a teaching moment and had them write what I should type out when requesting this title on Donors Choose. The following paragraph is plagiarized with permission from one of my students...
