My Students

One of the great things about reading is connecting with the characters, but the characters in the books in my classroom often have little in common with my students.

My young readers attend a high achieving Title 1 school in a large urban school district.

They are an enthusiastic group of three and four-year-old general and special education preschool students, in a program geared towards school readiness and language development.

My Project

I want to provide my students books about children from many different cultures, thus allowing them to read about characters like themselves, and make connections to their own lives. Books by authors such as Ezra Jack Keats, Faith Ringgold and Gary Soto will do just that. These books will be used as read-a-loud stories and in the classroom library for many years to come.

Learning to read is the most important academic achievement that students make.

Please help me spark my students' interest in books while they are still young. It will make a difference for the rest of their lives!
