Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For many of these children, it is the first time in a classroom setting. They will be expected to sit at a table with 5 other classmates and keep all their supplies organized.
I have 32 children in my class.
They come from a poor, below poverty level neighborhood. Most of the families are from the Dominican Republic and Spanish is the primary language spoken in the home. The children attend the largest and highest ranked elementary school in New York City. All of their supplies are provided.
My Project
I am requesting seat-pockets to help each student be more organized. We are fortunate enough to be given math, social studies, and science workbooks. The seat-pockets can hold the books for each student as well as their writing utensils. At the beginning of each lesson, students reach into their seat-pocket and retrieve the required material.
Every one knows that organization is a key factor in learning.
When a student has control over their learning environment and materials, they feel empowered and ready to conquer. Young children are just learning how to keep their materials organized and the seat-pockets give them that extra help.
