My Project
"It's MSK time, Let it Shine!" My Sister’s Keeper: Yonkers is a culturally responsive initiative designed to promote positive self-concept and identity development, foster cultural capital and pride, deepen peer bonding through the exploration of sisterhood, and empower our young women with the ability to spread their wings and SOAR! Sisterhood, opportunities for agency and impact, academic success through engagement, and resilience and hope)
We want our girls to create lanyards and accept a different keychain and pin for each activity to show the growth through the restorative practice and relationship building they do.
With your help we plan to use the keychains for each lesson we work through and build unity. We want our girls to be proud of who they are and the connections they are building as one strong family and the keychains they collect through each activity symbolizes the work they are doing to be future leaders.
For our first activity we ask the young ladies to complete a personal flower chart, filling in each petal using the prompts provided. For example "Something I am proud of is.." or "An experience that has affected my character and made me who i am is.." We then collect the flower and read out the statements on each petal asking the girls to only comment on others petals and what value they see in those experiences.
As we build our community it is not always easy to be brave but vulnerable and to provide each girl with a SUNFLOWER keychain to add to their lanyard we want it to remind them of the petals that make them unique. This is just one of the many, many, MANY sessions we have planned for this year!
