I teach students with special needs. Due to the various learning disabilities that my students have (MIMD, Autism, OHI, ADHD), reading is often quite a challenge for them. They become easily frustrated when they are not able to read the same books that their peers are reading. I have found that Dr. Seuss books work wonders with my students for many reasons. A limited vocabulary is used in the books which makes them easier for struggling readers. The use of rhyme helps children be able to easier decode the words and also helps hold their interest since it makes the books so enjoyable to read. The Dr. Seuss books are extremely entertaining and my students particularly enjoy the nonsense words that are frequently used in the stories. The repetition incorporated in the books is also a benefit to a child that finds reading very difficult. I am constantly borrowing books from other people and trying to reserve them at various libraries. I would love to be able to offer to my students a huge variety of Dr. Seuss books. I have always dreamed of having the complete set of Dr. Seuss books in my classroom library so they would be readily accessible at all times to my students. Thank you for considering my proposal.
