My students are a group of the most wonderful young adults diagnosed with intellectual/developmental disabilities/Autism you will ever meet. They live life to the fullest. They range in age from 14 to 20 and can stay with me until 21 years old. We are located in what is a high poverty high school and more than half the students come from low income homes.
They enjoy learning and greet each day with a smile and positive attitude.
They love taking part in all that high school has to offer and make friends wherever they go. My students tackle their classwork much like they tackle life, all in with a positive attitude. They enjoy being at school and learning new skills.
My Project
With all of my students having different sensory needs, I need an array of fidgets, gizmos and building activities to keep hands busy and minds focused. When the noise, light and activity of my classroom becomes overwhelming to my students, they need fidgets, gizmos and activities to decompress and and let their sensory needs be filled. Fluorescent lighting can be harsh to many with sensory disorders. The Educational Insights Fluorescent Light Filters will allow maximum and optimal lighting for the classroom. The Legos will allow students who decompress by following directions and building things meet their sensory needs. The Sensory Sand will allow students with tactile sensory needs to squish and squeeze to reduce their anxiety and the Mukool Sand Molding Tools will allow students to explore their creativity during sensory time. The Therapy Putty will satisfy the stickies and as well as help with Occupational Therapy needs. The Guwheat Pencil Grips New Smile Design for Kids Handwriting Posture Correction will help students who are having difficulty gripping a pencil. The various fidget toys will help students focus, relax and reduce anxiety as they work their way through the day.
