My Scholars Will Excel In Reading And Math With An iPad!
My students need an iPad mini with a protective case so that they can read and listen to digital books, work on phonics during literacy centers, conduct research, and store pictures.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For some of my students, this is the first time they will attend school. I have 22 four and five year old students who are all students of color, from low socioeconomic homes, the majority are learning English, and all of them are learning to read and write. An iPad will enhance my students' education.
All my students are students of color from a high poverty neighborhood.
Almost all students are learning English as their Second Language. Most of my students' parents do not speak English and have little means to help them learn English at home. Although they live and play in a high poverty and high crime neighborhood, my students are determined to come to school every day and learn even though the odds are against them.
They use cooperation in small group work, are learning to be assertive without hurting other's feelings, are taking on the responsibility of doing what is right, joining in other's feelings by showing that they care, and practicing self regulation by understanding the choices they make have consequences. Although we live in a high technology country, our school is a poverty school and not well equipped with computers and we have no iPads. I feel my students deserve the same opportunities as all other students, and your donations will help bridge the technology gap.
My Project
An iPad will enable my students to listen to online books through apps such as Reading Rainbow and Storia. I also hope to keep track of their progress through a website where each student will have their own personal classroom page. I hope to create an iPad literacy center where my students can practice phonics and learn how to read and respond to literature.
I hope to use the iPad for math centers as well so that my students can learn about shapes, colors, addition, and subtraction through online applications. With the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, a lot of new testing will be done on computers. My students will also take the STAR Literacy test twice this year on iPads that are shared and rotated among our district. My students are at a disadvantage because they will be taking this test on a device that they have not had a chance to learn how to use. Having an iPad in my classroom will help give my students equal opportunities to learn through technology.
Having an iPad in our classroom will give my students opportunities to learn and apply learning through technology.
Even though we are living in a digital age where much learning and testing will be done on computers, our classroom is not set up so that my students can take advantage of the many learning opportunities an iPad has to offer. With an iPad, my students can be connected to hundreds of online books and be able to use the device to explore the world outside of their community.
