My Retelling Movie

My students need an iPad Mini and protective case to film each other as they retell stories that can be shared with their teacher, parents and our school.

My Students

One thing that kindergarten students love is to tell STORIES! As their teacher I need a way to creatively channel that love into the skill of retelling a story that has been either read to them or they have read on their own. The video camera on an iPad Mini is the perfect tool for this purpose.

My kindergarten students live in a rural community and attend our small community Title I school.

Most of my students qualify for assistance due to high poverty. Even though some face challenges at home, they come to school eager to learn and create new things. Each one enjoys listening to a story being read to them. They even applaud after a story is finished.

My Project

Adding an iPad Mini to our retelling center will allow a new creative outlet for my students as well as giving me a better measurement of how well they can retell a story. The iPad Mini has a simple one-tap video camera that will allow my students to become the director of their own "retelling movie". After recording their best "retelling movie", I can review it for assessment and even share it with their parents or on our school's video announcements. Along with learning to retell a story, my students will learn how to plan, organize and problem solve while creating their "retelling movie". What props do they have? Do they need to create an additional prop in our creation station to help tell the story? What are the important parts to retell in the story? The discovery of these answers builds their confidence in what they can accomplish as learners.

Adding this one piece of technology to my classroom's retelling center will open creative doors for my students.

The iPad Mini is a simple tool that can allow a 6 year old to become the director of his own "retelling movie". With your support, my students will be applauding each others "Retelling Movies"!
