Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Tucked in the heart of the downtown area is a school where 87% of the student body are on free/reduced lunch. If anything else, they don't let their financial status get in the way. None of the students live in the area and take various modes of public transportation to get to school each morning. My students attend a magnet school with its emphasis in Homeland Security, Forensics, Law Enforcement, and Law and they have the drive in them to make an impact in each field.
Let’s put it like this— my students have the drive in them to make an impact in each field.
My Project
I have a dream where my students walk into my class, tell me with excitement a book they finished reading on their own, and ask for my recommendation about another book they should read. This dream can become a reality with your help in helping me create my reading nook.
My students enjoy their specific academy classes, but hate coming to my reading class.
My students tell me all the time, “I hate reading” or “This story is boring.” Hearing these statements from them breaks my heart, so that is why I specifically picked resources tailored to them. Since my school specializes in the law and legal field, I picked Monster by Walter Dean Myers because it is about a teenage boy in juvenile detention and on trial for a crime. I chose Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson because it is an age-appropriate novel about a disenfranchised teenager who demonstrates the importance of speaking up for oneself. Also, I chose graphic novels, so they can have background knowledge about Greek Mythology. Lastly, I selected Upfront New York Times Magazines, so my students can read and analyze current informational articles.
With this reading nook I look forward to the day my students open up a book, while sitting comfortably on a bean bag , during their rotational groups.
