Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come into our classroom smiling every morning. For many of them kindergarten is their first experience with school and they would attend three hundred and sixty-five days a year if they could! They are like sponges soaking up everything.
I like to think that we teach the whole child at our school.
It's not just about the reading and writing, but inspiring the next Van Gogh or Galileo. We incorporate lots of hands-on activities so they can apply what they are learning in different ways. We have over 90% of our students who qualify for free/reduced lunch, which means their families live below the poverty level. I want to make sure they are growing in every area of their lives.
My Project
I want to give my students hands-on practice with the concepts they are learning in math every day. My Kindergarten students learn better by doing, by discovering, by moving. I am asking for resources for our math workstation time such as tangrams and cards to help them create designs. As well as pattern blocks, geoboards, and several different activities using ten frames.
My job is to make math fun!
Even basic math can be difficult for my students. I have to lay the foundation for all the future math concepts they will learn in their academic career. By practicing with ten frames we are applying ways to compose and decompose numbers which helps them with addition and subtraction activities.
These resources would give my students a unique way to practice their skills. They will have fun learning math and that could develop into a passion that will translate into success for them as they go through their academic careers.
