Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergarten is often the first experience in school for my students. They are precocious, curious and creative. Many of them have already been labeled "at-risk" because of the obstacles they have faced in their past. Our school is located in an area of low economic development, and my students just don't have the same access to resources that many other students do.
We want our students to develop many passions in school.
We want to teach the whole child. Our students need to have multiple experiences each day to apply their creativity in different ways. They are learning to be readers, mathematicians and artists. You may help inspire them with skills that will help them throughout their academic career!
My Project
I am requesting math resources for my students. Every day they work in hands-on workstations to practice the skills they are learning. At the same time, I pull students to work with individually or in groups based on their academic needs.
The best way for students to learn basic math skills is by practicing in a hands-on way.
The various counters will be used to practice counting, making patterns, adding and subtracting. The ten-frames help them practice basic number sense and being able to create 10's which sets them up for success in place value lessons. The pop and add games are ways for the students to play games in workstations; they don't even realize they are learning!
My Kindergarten students need lots of practice manipulating counters to make numbers visible to them. I am not a worksheet teacher, I believe in having my students practice skills in a way they can discover as they learn. They have great conversations with each other discussing different ways they can make numbers. This is the best way for them to learn.
