My students need books about math such as Sort it Out, Lemonade in Winter, and A Pair of Socks. My students need logic games, puzzles, and a class set of rekenreks to practice basic math concepts.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach an amazing group of curiosity-seeking, hard-working, school-loving students. They thrive despite the challenges they face daily like growing up in an area of low economic development or learning English as their second language. They grow by leaps and bounds in their year with me!
Like many districts across the country we face budget cuts and there is just not enough money to supply resources for every classroom.
Math just doesn't get the same attention in our schedules and budgets as reading does. I would love to be able to have resources that would make learning math more fun for my students!
My Project
When you teach in an early childhood classroom, math is an important focus. We are responsible for laying a foundation in concepts of problem-solving, recognizing patterns, measurement and many other skills. All of these concepts lead to students who can think critically.
Books are a great way to introduce and illustrate these math concepts to my students.
I have asked for titles like 10 Black Dots and 12 Ways to Get 11 that I can read with my Kindergartners in small group instruction as well as allowing the students to read in their workstation activities. There are also games and puzzles that will encourage my students to solve problems and really think about the math the concepts they are applying.
Finally, a big goal of this proposal is to make learning math fun for my students! For most of my students it is the first time they are learning even how to count. By the end of the year they are my Mighty Mathematicians and your generous donation could help me see that growth in my kiddos!
