My Students

Students at our magnet school are exposed to all arts disciplines, including dance, drama, visual art, strings, general music, and physical education. Students visit these classes about once per week and are involved in performances throughout the year.

In dance class, students learn movement for expression, abstraction, personal health, entertainment, and associative learning.

Dance lessons follow the NC Essential Standards and focus on process over product where students learn to work both independently and collaboratively in a safe setting.

My Project

In this lesson, the class explores emotions and how to show emotions through movement; not just by using facial expressions.

Students learn to abstract the quality of the emotion and create corresponding movements.

"My Many Colored Days" is presented in such a way that allows students to know that feelings change and it is ok for each person to have different feelings, even some times not know how one feels. After we read the book as a class, we create class movements for four of the pages. We practice how to make sure we are using movements which are not obvious to the emotion. Students then work in groups to re-read the book and create group movements for two pages. As we read through the book again, students move at the appropriate times: some pages are only one group moving and some have whole-class choreography, creating an informal performance piece. Students learn to collaborate, create, respect others in both preparation and during performance, and gain an understanding for how they can express their feelings with movement. Students have a sense of choice and the realization that their smaller part aids in the creation of a bigger product.

Having a class set of this book will allow each student to follow along during teacher-directed reading. In group work, individual copies of the book allow students to work more effectively in the group, as they are all fully engaged, assist EL or low-leveled readers the opportunity to view pictures, and allow high-leveled readers the opportunity to see how the author uses various text features as a form of expression and text association.
