Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My youngest students in the resource room are so eager to learn and yet struggle to grasp letter and number concepts at the same rate as their peers.
Learning that comes through play is the best way to engage their whole body and retain the lessons we try to teach.
Practicing their lessons on their own time does not occur in most of their homes for a variety of reasons from language barriers, to lack of time, to basic needs are not even being met.
Many of my students are on their own when it comes to homework and that puts them at a great disadvantage.
My Project
When students are learning letter sounds and simple addition and subtraction, it benefits them to have objects to move around and written representations of those symbols. Accommodations for kids with special needs always include math charts, base ten blocks, plastic letters. For practice, it is common to give kids their own white board and markers. Our school is a dual language campus which means that the kids move from one room to another for different subjects. This makes moving all those tools challenging.
A briefcase of sorts has pockets for different sets of moveable objects, space for white boards and writing utensils, and slots for all the charts they need for math and reading subjects.
It zips up and keeps kids from losing their essential aids. With a hook on their desk, this also will keep things from getting lost inside desks. And best of all, if they need to work from home, it keeps everything in one place to take home. This will also make virtual learning for extended periods much better supported with individual sets of materials.
