My Students

Kindergarten is a place for social AND academic growth, however, our classroom is lacking the place to do such learning! We are in need of a rug and teaching easel so we can come together and share our experiences this year.

Kindergarten, for most of my students, is their first experience of school.

Our school was recently taken over by the state as a "turn around" plan and had the school not been given this opportunity, it was likely to close. Unfortunately, the state in which our classroom was left in and the materials available to my students are quite reflective of the need for the turn around. I want their first classroom to be a warm, inviting place where learning is accessible to everyone. I want this classroom to be a place where social and environmental pressures are not a source of stress or distraction. Most importantly, I want my students and their families have a place that they feel safe, valued, and proud to attend.

My Project

The rug and teaching easel work hand-in-hand, both being an essential part of an elementary classroom (at the moment we have tile and a chalkboard). Each morning we have a morning meeting sitting in a circle, where we greet each other, work on social needs, and grow as little people. Throughout the course of the day, the rug is the center place for learning. At such a young age, all classroom activities need to be modeled before implemented to ensure all students have an understanding. The rug gives us the stage to do. We conduct whole group science experiments together, explore new math games, and also spend time doing various activities for kinesthetic learners. The rug keeps the young mind organized, it provides an age and developmentally appropriate learning center. It offers students a place to learn that is comfortable, yet structured. It integrates crucial social work into academics, something that is highly stressed in the new Common Core Curriculum.

These items will be a huge help by allowing my students to experience their benefits rather than focus on being uncomfortable.

Currently, our lessons are often interrupted by students feet falling asleep, and ankles hurting from sitting criss-cross on the tile. Also, teaching handwriting in chalk is very difficult for little people who are still developing their fine motor skills!
