Help me give my students meaningful guided reading lessons by providing them with a portable whiteboard on wheels that can move to the part of the room that is the most distraction free.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students show up to school, smiling and ready to learn despite the various things life has dealt them that would be hard for an adult to deal with, let alone a 4th grader. For many of them, education is the only thing that is positive in their lives.

Many of my students live in a housing community for families who have been displaced from their home.

They come to school on "the walk" each morning, during which school staff walk to the community, pick up all of the kids enrolled in our school, and walk them over for a day of learning.

Even with this additional help getting to school from our staff, many students are chronically absent. One of the things that helps the students who struggle due to trauma at home or absences is small group instruction. Students are pulled to a quiet place in the room for a lesson that supplements the gaps in their learning. Right now, I only have a personal sized whiteboard (8.5" x 11") to model on. This rolling whiteboard would help me be able to make small group lessons more meaningful and distraction free.

My Project

In my class of thirty-five fourth graders, I have students ranging from a second grade reading level to a sixth grade reading level. In a class with these dynamics, small group instruction in guided reading in a distraction free area of the room is crucial for their success.

Right now, I am modeling guided reading content on a whiteboard that is the size of a piece of paper.

A larger whiteboard would mean that I could model much more effectively for my reading groups, as well as project images on a blank board. This whiteboard will enable me to take learning on the go around the classroom, helping students achieve.
