The bell rings and frenetic energy fills the air. The students set up their instruments and the cacophony crescendos. Quiet classrooms are clearly overrated!
My students never cease to amaze me!
They have incredible energy and a wonderful sense of humor. They hail from all over the globe and speak a multitude of languages. Some are in honors classes, others require much learning support. Some are from comfortable middle class backgrounds while others live in poverty. When they enter the band room, all these differences fall by the wayside. They work together, help one another and build lifelong friendships. When they pick up their instruments, they play as one. I am honored and humbled to stand before them!
My Project
The new materials will help a great deal in our classroom. The two euphonium cases will replace our old ones, which are held together with duct tape and bungee cords. Due to the poor condition and size of our cases, it is often challenging for students to take euphoniums home. The new cases will make home practice possible for more of my students. Our repertoire in both the symphonic and jazz bands often calls for trumpet mutes. The mutes add a specific tone color to the music. We do not own mutes and my students cannot afford to purchase them. The swabs will be used to clean out the clarinets after every rehearsal. This is very important because many of our instruments are quite old and proper care and maintenance will help them last longer. Finally the sheet cork will be used to replace tenon corks on clarinets and neck corks on our saxophones. This will allow our instruments to be in good condition for out upcoming concert.
Our school band has become more than a class.
It is a community of its own. The band room is a place where the students feel safe to express themselves. As many music programs across the nation fade away due to insufficient financial support, our band continues to flourish. Through the kindness of our guardian angels on this website we have been able to expand our program to reach nearly 250 students each year!
