Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kids are bright, energetic, full of imagination and fun. I say "my kids" because that's exactly what they are. They are my kids for 180 days. I care about them, I nurture their growth and I worry about their futures. I spend more time with my students than I do with my two young daughters at home.
Just like I want for my daughters at home, I want the absolute best for my students.
My heart breaks when I see my kids walking around homeless people on their way to school or hearing stories about how their families must move again after being evicted. Many of my students have witnessed things that most six-year-old children wouldn't dream about seeing. Despite the challenges, my kids still come to school with smiles on their faces, excited to learn.
I come to work every day with the goal of providing a warm, safe and supportive environment for my kids since many of them do not have that in their own homes. When my kids tell me at the end of the day that they're not ready to go home, I know I've done my job.
My Project
Thanks to the generosity of several retired teachers, I have inherited over 30 books on tape. The problem is that I only have a boombox from the early nineties to play them on. The cords from the headphones become tangled, the students get frustrated, the arguing starts and, then, unfortunately, the books get put away. I need a better solution!
Numerous studies have shown that students with access to a listening library develop 1) a greater interest in reading, 2) improved literacy skills and comprehension and 3) increased vocabulary.
Having a new listening center with wireless headphones, a comfy couch and beanbag chairs to sit on would greatly benefit my students and my sanity!
My students would use the listening center during UA (universal access) time. During UA time, I need centers to keep my busy first graders engaged while I pull small groups to reteach lessons, practice sight words, work on fluency or provide support in whatever other area they need support in. UA time is an essential part of my day, and it's hard to get through all of my groups without standards-based materials that hold student interest.
After listening to books on tape, my students could then complete book reports, have collaborative conversations, share vocabulary and so much more. The possibilities are endless! My goal is always to provide a home away from home for my kids, and having this listening center would give my students a great place to work and learn!
