My Students

Our health class is driven by the students' need and desire to understand their body and how it functions. Looking at individual body systems on paper is helpful, but to fully grasp the complexity and interactions of the body a model with removable parts is necessary.

Our school is a small close knit community that gives students a second chance at earning their high school diploma.

Teenagers don't always realize the long term impact of the choices they make. Our students have dropped out of high school and chose to return because they realize their education is important and essential to their future success. Along with a standard high school curriculum, we focus on social and emotional skills that will assist them in their post high school endeavors.

My Project

I like to have different materials around the classroom that can ignite curiosity. I have a wasp in a sealed container, a very large pine cone, a cactus and a small female anatomy model available for students to look at. Having these materials around gives students the opportunity to observe and ask questions. If I had a full human body model, this would also be available to them. However, the primary use for the model would be health class. We study human body systems, focusing on how they are all connected and necessary to function. If we had a model, students could get a three dimensional view of the organs and their locations to further their understanding.

The ultimate goal of our health class is to have our students understand their bodies.

With a better understanding of how their body functions, they can make informed decisions regarding their health and wellness. If there is a model available to the students, it will help further their understanding and appreciation of their body and how it functions.
