This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the anticipation you felt the first time you held a Polaroid in your hand, waiting for it to develop? Or the satisfaction of showing others an image that your produced? I want to teach my students about their community through the lens of their perspective using Polaroids.
My students are first grade emergent bilinguals, many with learning disabilities, in a large school in New York.
They are bright and curious and creative, especially when given the tools and language to explore their experiences and their community. Some of them are still learning appropriate school behavior but all of them are capable of producing large scale projects if given the responsibility and the tools.
My Project
These cameras will lend to our classroom community and teach us about the community inside and outside our school building. Our social studies curriculum explores what a community is and the responsibilities of the citizens within the community. My classroom as a microcosm for the outside community demands students to be responsible and think critically about the people and resources we have transactions with every day. My students will be able to handle the cameras and see visual representations of their community on the community map we will create in our classroom. This unit will include the components of the community as well as critical thinking about social justice, responsibility, environmental issues and self-advocacy. My students will learn interactively through their participation and self reflection.
These materials in my classroom allow for us to take our learning experiences outside of the walls of my room and the covers of books and really apply our knowledge to our world around us.
You are allowing students to be critical thinkers and active citizens in their school and neighborhood.
