Help me give my students the opportunity to read stories that they can connect with by seeing themselves in the setting, characters, and or plot along with school supplies to attain information they need to further their understanding.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have been affected by this pandemic not only academically but socially as well! I need help to engage them through literature that can make them feel included and seen! I want them to rise above the difficulties of this time, adapt and succeed with the help of productive lessons and materials.
It becomes challenging to organize time and space when the space at home is tight or when you don’t have the right tools needed to succeed outside of the classroom.
All this mainly due to the fact that many parents have to continue working and so it becomes difficult to monitor school work or find proper child care.
Another factor to consider is the amount of distractions: sirens, neighbors, lack of food, or stressed out family members that have to continue to function within the pandemic. In the classroom these things are not as prominent and so kids can stay on task.
So helping them make plans, using charts and seeing their growth is of great importance. When they can feel in control and able to monitor their growth it gives them a sense of purpose. Motivation and consistency is key to make this doable!
My Project
The materials that I have chosen will give my students the opportunity to see themselves and find ways to make reading meaningful and fulfilling.
I want them to feel engaged and supported while at home.
It is important for them to find themselves in books so that they can speak their truth and share their stories.
With the use of tote bags and personal tools that are properly labeled, I can help them stay organized and in control of meeting expectations needed to reach all grade-level goals. Learning at home and school will become much easier because all students will be able to have a special place to put away books and papers needed to succeed.
When children and families feel connected to the curriculum and the teacher, results will be seen and gains will be achieved. I am certain that the books, totes, pencil cases, notebooks and special labeling will make a huge difference in helping my students and their families!
