"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. The chain of evil must be broken" ~Martin Luther King, Jr . My students are fighting darkness with light by working toward on their "My 26" project...Rachel's Challenge.
As part of a very compassionate group of students at our middle school, our Builders Club students have accepted Rachel's Challenge.
Students work daily to show love and compassion for students, families, peers, and community. Students are challenged to show intentional acts of kindness, to create a community in which it is impossible for bullying to exist.
In response to the recent tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary, our students have developed a new project. This "My 26" project works to fight darkness by challenging students to complete 26 acts of kindness in honor of those lives lost at Sandy Hook. Students have challenged their peers, teachers, families, and community to take the challenge as well. Students will celebrate their achievements toward this project on 4/26 (for 26).
My Project
Resources requested in this project include supplies needed to take our efforts of kindness into the school and local community. Many students have started their own acts of kindness projects (including a book drive, recycling project, used clothing drive, coat drive, flash mob, words of kindness project, etc). In order to support these students in their projects and bring public awareness to their efforts, we request these supplies.
Through their efforts in Rachel's Challenge, these students inspire me to be a better teacher, community member, and person! Their sincere dedication to showing genuine kindness is inspiring. By supporting projects like "My 26", we teach kids to identify the needs of others and empower them to take ACTION. They learn the importance of showing compassion to those in their community through works. When we engage our children in opportunities to do good...they surpass our expectations!
To support this project, we have requested poster making materials, post-it notes for our acts of kindness display, paper for student produced brochures, markers, memory ribbon, and materials for a memory balloon release.
As educators, we are challenged with not only the duty to provide academic learning opportunities, but we accept the exceptional opportunity to nurture the social and emotional development of our youth. Thank you for your investment in our chain reaction of kindness.
