Help me give my students an outdoor learning classroom. We currently have over two acres of unused land adjacent to our campus. These supplies will help us to create an area that will elevate and engage students.
We strive to prepare students for the 21st century by providing quality curriculum that integrates all content areas. Our approach encompasses Problem Based Learning activities, integration of technology, and culturally relevant activities.
Our 7-8 graders are comprised of a very diverse population including English Language Learners, free and reduced lunch and Special Need students.
These students sometimes don’t have the support at home, but are coming to school requesting more math and science hands-on experiences. Our rural school serves students K-8, while our K-6 is an International Baccalaureate accredited. We are focused on providing our students with a rich educational experience that school which provides our students with limited funds and curriculum for reading interventions but excludes the sciences and math.
My Project
These supplies will help turn an unused two acre parcel of land into an Outdoor Learning Classroom available to students K-8. Studies show that students who participate in activities in Outdoor Classrooms decrease in areas of obesity, depression and disengagement.
Students who have access to an outdoor classroom show an increase interest in STEM, community involvement and civic duties.
Our high desert environment does not provide shade for prolonged sessions outside. These supplies will help turn what is currently a mesquite grove into an area that will transform the way students see their environment and the world. Students will be able to use this area with their teacher and local experts to learn about local flora and fauna. Their knowledge of their immediate environment will increase and their awareness of their place in the world will be magnified through hands on, real-world projects, experiments and observations.
