My Students

Our Title 1 urban middle school is home to almost 700 students. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and situations. Many of our students don’t have experiences beyond their neighborhood, so opportunities to expose them to the world through literature and school are valuable. Our kids are bright, resourceful, and full of energy. They are natural problem solvers who are growing in their ability to make good choices in their behavior and attitudes. These middle schoolers have the potential to become leaders in our community and country; investing in their education and growth is essential!

My Project

"We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too." Most of my students have experienced these far too seldom. Because the majority of my kids struggle with comprehension, vocabulary, and reading, their lexile level is years below their grade level. As a result, they are not comfortable tackling books alone. Few of my students read outside of school or for pleasure, and I would like to see that change. Novel studies are a meaningful way to engage learners, develop critical thinking skills, and increase writing ability while encouraging a love of reading.

In a highly monochromatic literary world, Jason Reynolds' 'Ghost' offers my kids characters they will "get" who are going through experiences they will understand.

Reading this relatable novel as a class will inspire them to stretch through the process and risk to find other books they connect with. Reynolds' contemporary novel reflects my students and their situations. As a result, I expect this novel will capture my student's hearts as it grows their skills and confidence.

Novel studies are filled not only with reading, but also with conversation and hands on activities to meet the needs of all kinds of learners. The easel and paper will be instrumental in producing anchor charts and other visuals as we journey through the novel together.
