Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are readers and leaders! They have learned that the current social unrest in our country is nothing new. They also believe we have made progress in the fight against racism in the past few decades. What they know for sure is that it is up to them to complete the job the rest of us started, to make America truly great for EVERYONE. One way to do this is to celebrate the diverse cultures from which we all come from.
My students are ready to delve into literature as diverse as the country we live in.
Whether Black, Latinx, Asian, or White my students want to read stories written about their experiences, their cultures, their journeys. Cultural awareness is a key ingredient in moving our country forward during these turbulent times. As readers and leaders, my students are ready to take on that challenge.
My Project
My students are smart, funny, and kind. Although the books they normally read portray relatable characters with universal values, they want to read literature with characters who are like them, characters that live in their skin. This graphic novel "New Kid" by Jerry Craft is just that. It follows Jordan, an African American boy who starts Middle School as the new kid.
I know my students will delve into this meaningful story.
This book offers an honest look at the issue of race and class in 2020 America. This is the perfect book for them!
