Mussels in Our Classroom to Restore Native Species
Help me give my students the materials we need to care for our mussels in the classroom. We are part of a pilot project to restore mussels to our waterways and need some supplies.

My Project
Our class has been selected to participate in a project to try to restore native mussels to our waterways that have been rendered endangered by human activities including pollution, heat, and other disruption of aquatic ecosystems. We have 25 yellow lamp mussels that we are tasked to care for and study in an effort to prepare them to be returned to our waterways. This allows students in my environmental science classes to learn more about these very important creatures to our river ecosystem and my chemistry classes to study first hand the chemistry of water and how it impacts the creatures living in it.
We need buckets and water containers as we cannot use tap water but need to collect water from our local streams and rivers to change out the water in our tank.
We need water quality testing strips to make sure that the water chemistry is safe and healthy for our mussels. We also need siphons to get the water out of the tank to change it weekly as well as to get water from the rivers and creeks into our containers to be taken into the classroom. We need calipers, scales, and thermometers to measure the conditions that our mussels are living in and to monitor their growth over the months they live in our classroom.
This project will give my students first hand experience with caring for living creatures that are an important and mysterious part of our ecosystem. Instead of talking about abstract things and watching videos, students will learn from the creatures themselves. We are very excited to help restore the health of our waterways and learn from our mussels in the classroom.
