This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bullying has become an epidemic in our schools! My students are challenged daily by peers who make fun of them because they have learning disabilities. They in turn tease each other. I want to build on their strengths and provide them with opportunities to handle bullying appropriately.

I am privileged to teach 4th and 5th grade students with multiple disabilities in a self-contained classroom.

Our school is located in a low-income area with a majority of second language learners. My students are greatly challenged when attempting to access grade level curriculum. Many struggle to retain concepts and therefore perform far below grade level. They are frequently teased by their average-developing peers. Many have not developed appropriate social skills and do not know how to respond to bullying. They need to build self-esteem and learn strategies to combat bullying.

My Project

I am requesting literature that addresses bullying and how to prevent it in the classroom and school-wide. These books include: Bullying in Schools, Bus Ride Bully, The Bully from the Black Lagoon, and Bully-Proof Your Classroom Teaching Kit. These books and resources will help my students understand what bullying is and strategies on how to prevent it. In addition, I want them to build self-esteem by learning cooperation skills, while fostering their interest in music. The bells and music books will teach them to play an instrument that requires working together to achieve a common goal. This will increase their self-esteem and create a team mentality to discourage bullying amongst class members. Learning an instrument will give them confidence in their abilities and help them handle bullying on the school yard more appropriately.

This project is vital to maintaining a positive classroom environment, as it will decrease and hopefully eliminate students bullying each other.

The literature will give them tools to handle bullying incidents outside of the classroom. Playing an instrument will build students' self-esteem and provide opportunities for success. They will learn cooperative skills and how to work as a team. Thank you for helping us prevent bullying.
