My Students
My students are musicians at heart. They love music. Every day at lunch and recess I hear them singing, dancing, or making up beats. They can't wait for music class. However, because of the economic situation facing their families, my students cannot afford to purchase even basic instruments.
My students are growing up in one of the most impoverished areas in Miami-Dade.
Schools here are vastly under-resourced, and there is a struggle to meet basic needs. Knowing the challenges that they face at home, I want my students to have an enriching school life. Most of them can't afford to take music lessons or even buy an instrument. Earlier this year, the students received donated recorders, which they love. They look forward to music classes and having their own instrument to play. I want to expand their music class and teach them new skills, as well as how to work together to make music.
My Project
After our previous donation of a set of recorders, my students have been learning to read and write music. Because of this, my school would like to have a concert, with my students playing their instruments. I would like to expand my music classes to other instruments, such as bells and other percussion, and give my students an opportunity to play as a band. Learning to read and write music is a valuable skill, and it is something my students will be able to carry into playing other instruments. We will be able to perform in the school concerts, and my students will have the opportunity to be recognized for their musical abilities and achievement.
Music is the reason I went to school every day.
It is what kept me motivated and excited. I want to keep my students motivated and excited, too. They need something to look forward to every day, and music is what drives them. Being able to perform for parents, relatives, and neighbors will not just affect my class, but the entire school culture, as well as the community around us.
