This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to make music with their voices but they are always begging me to play instruments. They need hand-on experiences reading music but my students have 3 classroom glockenspiels and that is all.

I currently teach approximately 500 students in grades K-5 throughout the week.

Our school is a Title I school with 90% free and reduced price lunch. My students are excited about music, and they always want to sing me a song. They also enjoy hands-on, authentic musical experiences.

My Project

With the addition of these new instruments, my students will be able to see and feel the notes that they are learning about in class. They will also be able to be a part of a multi-instrument ensemble that will not only challenge them but give them opportunities to work as a team like no other activity in school. My students need xylophones and mallets to have pitched percussion instruments to continue their musical instruction.

Studies show that competency in music is linked to higher test scores.

This is very important; however, what the studies don't tell you is that music makes you a whole person. Students have the ability to process feelings and expression in a safe environment through music. My classroom is one of the few places in most of my students' lives where this is possible.
