My Students
Each day, I provide a positive environment for my students to experience music. The magic that music brings to people is leaving our schools and children. I fight every day to open their eyes to the emotions and pictures that music can bring to each child and help them share this with others.
My students age from Kindergarten to 5th graders.
I see 5 classes of each grade level twice out of every six days. It is difficult to provide this many materials for so many students so they can all experience things together. Sharing is generally a practice they know well and are used to, but when we want to share music in larger groups, it is difficult for everyone to participate equally. Our school is a 1:1 district, with focuses on student-centered classrooms and technology. They are loving our technology driven world, but are losing imagination and wonder in things they cannot easily see or grasp.
My Project
These resources will help all of the students experience new kinds of music through movement and instruments. The ribbon wands and jump bands will be used to create group dances or student created movements. Activities will include learning about the dance of the Philippines "tinikling," form, and active listening. They will also be used for programs throughout the year to show teachers, friends, family and the community how we make music in class. The egg shakers and kazoos will help allow the students to see and play different instruments and learn techniques that help them become a better musician. They are also student friendly and easily accessible for primary to intermediate students. The coordinating book "Christopher Kazoo and Bongo Boo" introduces musical concepts through kazoo and bongo playing. Wonderful for primary students as well as older ones! All items will constantly help students understand rhythm, steady beat, and meter in different ways throughout the yea
My classroom is considered more "active" than most.
In doing so, the students are having hands-on experiences with music and discovering what they love. It improves memory and creates long lasting experiences they will never forget. They also learn how to share and show these feelings to others. It teaches them cooperation, creativity, and problem solving. Many of my students will never hear or feel music outside of music class, so it is my joy to bring this to them in as many ways as possible.
