Musical Robotics: Taking STEM to STEAM Through Music

My students need Fire Tablets with extra memory cards, Wonder Workshop Dash Robots and Wonder Workshop Xylophones to use at home to bring the Arts into our robotics program.

My Students

My students attend a tough, inner city school where 98% of the population receives free lunch, and 75% of their families receive AFDC assistance. The wealth of my school lies in our school community. We have fostered an environment where we play, sing, and dance together as we learn. The students and staff of my school invest themselves in creativity, and this type of learning has fostered significant trust. Because of this trust, my students are ready to confidently take part in a science project where they create and provide a series of coded instructions for the automatic performance of a task. My students will have no problem bringing STEAM to STEM with musical creativity through musical robotics!

My Project

My students need resources to check out for home use so they can use their musical creativity to support STEM learning and achievement across multiple settings and environments. By giving my students tablets, robots, xylophone kits and extra time for programming at home, they will be able to apply simple melodies we have learned in music class to programming and robotics.

As my students program the robot Dash to perform songs on the xylophone, they will utilize mathematical skill and apply science conceptual understanding using engineering principles and design thinking.

By allowing students to use these materials outside of class, a deeply technical environment will be created in their homes. They will become immersed in an enjoyable activity while applying concepts learned in the classroom.
