My Students

I truly feel my job as a music educator is not so much about "teaching a lesson", but more about helping children have a lifelong LOVE of music! There is simply nothing more exciting than finding new and FUN ways to teach children about the lifetime of joy that comes with a solid fine arts foundation.

My students are high-need, with a large percentage of special education, free and reduced lunch students and minorities.

Over a third of the parents within our school district do not have a high school diploma. My rural community is in an economically depressed area with a very high unemployment rate. But despite all of the challenges my students face every day, they still come to my class with smiles, ready to laugh, play and LEARN.

My Project

My students need additional classroom percussion and wind instruments, such as 23 recorders, 15 kazoos, and 16 egg shakers, new music curriculum and a set of composer DVDs to meet the state standards for music education. Many of the instruments in my classroom are over thirty years old! It's definitely time for some upgrades. With increased class sizes and old worn-down instruments, I usually do not have enough instruments to go around. My students and I are requesting new recorders, jingle bells, shakers and kazoos for classroom rehearsals and community performance opportunities. I'm proud of my students for all of the hard work they have put into learning to read music, but now we need more instruments to show off our skills! My students are also in need of new curriculum and composer videos to further their musical knowledge.
