Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in New York in an economically disadvantaged area. My school in particular has a high Special Needs population. I have been teaching music now for 8 years. Just this school year, I have finally been given a room to teach music in. No more carting instruments around the building.
For the past 8 years I have been carrying around the 2 drums I have and some borrowed Boomwhackers. Our main focus has been the history and theory of music, with using our desks, hands, and voices to make music. Now finally having a room to call my own, I want to begin drum circles and ultimately a drum circle club for the students to participate in as an after school activity.
A supply of musical instruments for my students to use will heighten their musical experiences this year. I am looking to give them the best music education possible, but that must include playing on instruments.
With your help my students will be able to express themselves musically. Some will finally find the voice they have been missing and will be able to speak through music.
