Musical Coding Is Our Jam!

Help me give my students musical coding activities to build 21st century skills and an Apple TV to share their work with their peers.

My Students

Our scholars come from an urban low socioeconomic area. We are the ELL program school for our town. We get new students throughout the year who are new to the country and many times have not been exposed to English.

These kids have grit and heart.

They look out for one another. Despite their various challenges, they come to school every day​ and give their best. They deserve the best rather than hand-me-downs. My students flourish in movement and collaborative activities. Music class is the perfect place to achieve this!

My Project

We are hoping to receive 3 Coding Jams and the required Osmo bases. Through these tools, students will be able to learn coding skills while creating music. Elements of melody, harmony, and rhythm can be explored through Coding Jam as well as pattern recognition. Initially we will use this as small group projects as a class. Then the materials will be a center that students can use throughout the school year.

Students will develop 21st century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication with this STEAM activity.

The Osmo Coding Jam system is a perfect tool to reach my diverse levels. The music rooms sees 800 students per week, each with varying strengths and room for growth. The Coding Jam allows for differentiation for all of the different learners in my room so I can both support and challenge them.

We also hope to receive an Apple TV so students can present their work seamlessly to the class on our projector and speakers. This will save time and help the pacing of our very short classes.
