it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our high school is a bright community in Harlem with students from all over New York that come from different cultures and backgrounds. In spite of the challenges that affect their lives, our students come to school full of energy and ready to learn. With that same energy, they embraced the piano class I taught last year. When the students realized that they could learn piano they took an interest very quickly. Many reached out to the administration to find out more about it, and some even fought to get transferred into the class. It was a meaningful experience for those who had never played before, and a place to improve for those who had some experience. At the end of the term, one of the students liked the class so much that they bought a keyboard so they could continue studying independently.
I am a Special Education teacher with a music background.
Our school has never had a music program, and I would like to change that. However, recent budget cuts prevent the school from purchasing musical instruments. I need your help to bring this opportunity to our students.
We are prepared to offer our students a violin class and/or after-school program where they can explore their creativity through such a beautiful instrument. My students will learn classical music, jazz, and popular music, and make connections with their own cultures and neighborhoods. These young people need a creative space where they can learn new skills, learn to cope in healthy ways, and express themselves, in this case through music. They are very excited about it.
