My Students
I teach students with special needs, who qualify for our services due to a medical diagnosis or orthopedic impairment. I am amazed everyday at the resiliency of my students, who approach each day and learning opportunity with excitement and curiosity, despite circumstances which make it difficult for them to access their environment. To see the joy and happiness that they carry with them makes everyday better.
My Project
As all of my students are participating in virtual learning, it has been my job as an educator to find ways to help them stay engaged and learn through a computer screen. My students experience a wide variety of challenges. Many of them have an orthopedic impairment, are vision impaired, or early learners (developmentally delayed for their age). These circumstances have made virtual learning especially challenging, and I’ve found that by providing physical learning items to my students, I can help them meet their goals and make progress. And because this is preschool, we play to learn!
Using sensory materials like sand and slime help students gain valuable fine motor skills, build tolerance of sensory experiences, and boost communication as we talk through and describe each activity.
In my experience musical instruments are invaluable! My students love music time the most and by providing instruments to each student, we can learn songs together, practice following directions, work on large and fine motor skills, and most importantly, be loud and silly!
