it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Bienvenidos, Shagotom, Karibu, Ni Hao, and Welcome to Ms. P's music classroom! There are worlds of music out there, and we explore them all! Whether speaking English, Spanish, or Bengali, all our young musicians have equal opportunities to learn, create, and perform.
The students at our South Bronx public elementary school come from families of high need--over 90% qualify for free or reduced meals and diverse cultural backgrounds.
79% of our population are English Language Learners at various stages of fluency. At home, they may speak Spanish, Bengali, Mandarin, French, a West African tribal language, or English often more than one of these!
All students receive general music instruction once a week as we sing, move, listen, and play together. I have seen many children who struggle academically due to language learning issues thrive in the music classroom--music truly is the universal language!
My Project
In music class, we aim to honor the rich diversity of heritages that lives within our students. Through engaging with folk songs and folk tales from around the world, children may share their home cultures at school and connect them with the cultures of their peers as well. A group of 3rd graders may create a soundtrack to accompany a Bengali folk tale some students take charge of instruments, some costumes, some narration (in the Bengali language perhaps!). A dual language class of 1st grades may sing of festive traditions in Spanish and English. A 4th grader may ask for her recorder in Mandarin after poring over a bilingual book on musical instruments. Imagine the worlds of music learning yet to come!
Our music program already makes use of Spanish language and West/East African songs and activities with glowing feedback from our families.
Your donation will help our music library grow, both in depth by adding more material to our existing language repertoires and in breadth by incorporating Bengali and Mandarin music and books. Multicultural music programming will help our students and families meaningfully connect to and within the school community.
