This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is a Title I school in a large urban setting where all students receive free breakfasts and lunches. I teach Music to all students (approximately 450) in Grades K - 8. I have many phonograph albums, some of which are like new, that I cannot share with my students because I do not have a record player on which to play them. It seems that records are no longer used in many places, and the players are hard to find. As a teacher, I am constantly searching for "new" ways to reach my students. I have, in storage, some wonderful albums that I could be using in my classroom, not only as examples of genres but records that involve movement, which is so important, especially in the lower grades. My theory is that the children need to be either "hands on" or up and moving or playing an instrument in music in order to retain the taught information. Having a phonograph turntable would afford my students the access to my large library of albums. In fact, I have collections of albums that I would love to play for my students; some of which are original Jimmy Dorsey, blues, jazz, etc. These albums would all tie in very nicely with the units the students work on throughout the school year. Bringing something "old" (such as a record player and records) back again will seem like something "new" to my students. Not exposing them to the music I have would be unacceptable on my part, as a teacher. To me, the most important thing I can do is to present these young people with every possible aspect of music that I can for the years that I teach them. It is a privilege for me to give these children the gift of music in as many ways as I can. Thank you.
