This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a middle school music teacher in an inner-city school, and I teach students from 6th to 8th grade. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background in an area infected with gangs and drugs. Many of my students, mostly poor, tell me that music class is the reason they stay in school.

We have an active performing arts program, but a limited budget.

My students write the music we can't afford to purchase. Whether it is for the instruments we have instead of those arranged for, or to transpose keys, my students spend lots of time notating music. Music technology software will make it faster.

My Project

Since we can't afford the music for all the songs we want to play, my students often arrange the music based on tunes they've heard, write parts for instruments whose music we can't purchase, transpose, or write music for instruments we do have, transpose keys for easier playing, etc. We have relied on more primitive music programs that we currently have at school. Music technology software would allow my students to compose and arrange music at school. This more sophisticated program will save us so much time and permit us to play more songs and arrange for the instruments we have--which may not be those we have music for.

I want to make the challenges and benefits of composing and arranging music available to all my students.

I want to make it easier and less time consuming for my students and permit all my students to do this at school.
