My Students

My students have been fortunate enough to receive ukuleles and guitars through the kindness of Donors Choose and private grant contributors, but imagine what it is like for my students having to play these instruments without having music stands to place the sheet music on!

I teach music at two public elementary schools in metropolitan Illinois.

At one elementary school, I teach music to approximately 300 students in grades K-8. In music, students at both schools learn to play instruments including the keyboard, guitar, ukulele, and classroom rhythm instruments in addition to singing, dancing, and moving. At the second school, I teach music to 250 students also in grades K-8. A high percentage of students at this school are bilingual in English and Spanish.

My Project

In this proposal, I am requesting 12 music stands. These music stands will be used by instrumental groups in class and during performances. The stands will allow student groups to perform free from the restriction of having to place sheet music on a desk, which inhibits proper playing positions. The music stands will allow students to stand up while performing as well, something students currently cannot do because they lack stands.

When students perform by reading from sheet music placed on music stands, as opposed to sheet music placed on a flat desk, the student not only performs better because of improved physical posture; the student "feels" and "looks" like a musician too!
