Music Stands for The Eagle's Orchestra

My students need music stands. The stands that they have are very old. They appear to be stands from the 1980's or older. They are cracked up, broken and diminishes the moral of the orchestra.

My Students

Our school is located in the inner city of the Southwestern side of Richmond. Serving students in grades 6 – 8, the student/teacher ratio is roughly 15 to 1. There are over 700 students at the school, with a large portion on students who come from bi-lingual households. Each year a small portion of students start the school year unable to speak or understand the English language.

Students are mostly from low to moderately low-income homes, making 98% of students eligible for free lunch.

Our students are also compassionate, caring and respectful learning. They love music and love having opportunities to play and perform for their families and community. Our students come to school and class ready to give their all to their learning in spite of the challenges in which they may face, i.e., lack of proper equipment. We want our students to experience goodness in education. We want them to know they are worth the investments of today in hopes of a brighter future tomorrow.

My Project

My orchestra students are divided by grade level. There are approximately 15 students in each class (4 throughout the day).

The music stands that they are using are broken, shattered, rusty and very old.

They appear to be decades old and in very bad condition.

During our last concert we did not look as good as we sounded, and that was troubling to me, because I believe every child should also learn being, feeling, and looking good. When all criteria is not met it lowers their self-esteem.

Students race to be first in class so that they have first choice to unbroken, workable music stands. Proper equipment is essential to good learning. With proper equipment students can be inspired to study and create beautiful music.
