it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I will be starting my fourth year teaching at this tremendous school. When I started, the school was transitioning from a traditional middle school to an arts academy. I teach instrumental music. Currently I teach four bands and two orchestras. We are a public school that is 4th through 8th grade. Students are focused and driven to excel in the arts as well as academics. Students begin their journey at an early age and develop their passion for the arts as they progress through the program.
My Project
Students who choose an instrument such as a woodwind, string, or percussion instrument are in constant need of supplies. Woodwind players of reed instruments such as the saxophone or clarinet need reeds to make their instruments produce a proper sound. String players are in constant need of strings as they wear out on a regular basis. We need a drum pedal, metronomes, reeds and other essential music supplies. Giving students access to these supplies will encourage more students to try these instruments. These supplies will also help students perform with optimum sound quality on their instruments. Often times, when parents are in charge of purchasing these supplies, inferior quality and incorrect sizing is a common dilemma. This causes frustration as parents need to make multiple trips to the music store and students are unable to be productive in the classroom for days at a time. Having these supplies on hand will alleviate this problem and create a productive classroom environment.
