Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school has been serving Pre-K through 5th grade students and their families in the Houston ISD community for 15 years. The school offers two-way and transitional bilingual programs, skills for learning and living (SLL), and ancillary programs in physical education, technology, art, and music. The campus consistently offers opportunities for students to engage in cross-cultural activities through programs and presentations for the parents and families of their community.
The majority of students at my campus come from Hispanic and African-American families.
Over half of the students enrolled are English Language Learners (ELL) and over 80% qualify for the Free and Reduced Price Lunch program. The students campus-wide benefit from the inclusion offered by their special area classrooms.
My Project
My music classes this year are split between two campuses and traveling into home rooms for part of the day. Primary grades are seen first in the morning, followed by upper grades in the afternoon. Currently, there is not a set of instruments that can be transported between classrooms and campuses.
My students need easily portable music to help provide fully enriched music classroom experiences.
These instruments, including a hand drum set and boomwhackers, will be used to incorporate fun and exciting activities with traditional concept learning. With them, students can be a part of instrument ensembles, perform accompaniments for peers to foster cooperative learning, and engage in games that promote knowledge acquisition and retention.
